As a transgender woman, where is the worst place for you to go alone as in you’re worried about your safety. I know that’s an issue for some transgender people and thought you might could offer some suggestions of places that are completely safe and places maybe it’s best to avoid. Much love!!!
Dear Anonymous,
Given the current state of affairs in our country it’s important to be safe as a transgender person- there are a few things to consider about going out on the town. The most important would be to make sure you are aware of your situation and your surroundings. Don’t travel into places or spaces that your gut tells you is sketchy. Take a look at where exits are when you go shopping and have a cell phone with you. The second thing is to project confidence in your interactions with people.
When it comes to safe places for those who are transgender to shop, there are a few places that are safe around town. For clothes, I choose to go to Goodwill in Carrollton as they are very affirming, and you can try on clothes. Ross is also a good place to shop for the same reasons. If you enjoy reading, there is Underground Books located just off the square.
Living in Carrollton our community is a college town and has a diverse population. Most restaurants are friendly towards our community, but in the restaurant setting be confident in using the bathroom you most feel comfortable using keeping in mind how you present in public.
There are many places to shop in Carrollton that are accepting of transgender folks, but there are a few places I avoid using the bathrooms as I have had bad experiences, try to avoid gas stations as the restrooms can be problematic although Quick Trip is generally a safe place to use.
There are many more places and locations that are safe to shop including ULTA, Bath & Body Works, and Target to name a few more. In the coming weeks look for more information on Carrollton Rainbow for businesses which have committed to being safe spaces for members of our community!
I hope that this advice gives you a few places to get started, for the majority of businesses in Cowtown, folks are friendly but everyone’s experiences may vary! I hope this helps!
Sincerely,
Cristin
