Transgender Day of Visibility

Sunday, March 31st was Transgender Day of Visibility. It is an important holiday within the LGBTQ+ Community because it allows us to appreciate members of our community who often go un-recognized due to social stigma. So, while it is no longer the 31st, we still want to extend this day into this week by acknowledging several prominent Transgender individuals from the past and present. These individuals come from different walks of life and all from different time periods, they all have either been soldiers, actors/actresses, singers, politicians, etc.     Notable Trans Individuals:   Taylor Alxndr- Born: 1993- Pronouns: They/Them- Known for: Drag artist, activist, musician, founder of “Southern Fried Queer Pride”   


Robina Asti- Lived: 1921-2021- Pronouns: She/her- Known for: Navy Pilot during World War Two. She is the record holder for the world’s oldest flight instructor.  


Alexandra Billings- Born: 1962- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Acting, singing, education, activism.  


Chaz Bono- Born: 1969- Pronouns: He/Him- Known for: Activism, acting, singing. Son of musician Cher & Sonny Bono.  


Sister Mary Elizabeth Clark- Born: 1938- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: US Navy & Army Soldier, Trans Rights Activist, AIDS Activist, Nun. She helped worked with AIDS Education & Global Information System and propelled it to the most definitive and most accessible source of information on AIDS at the time before the advent of the World Wide Web.   


Joanne Conte- Lived: 1933-2013- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: First openly trans individual to be elected to a city council in the US.   


Fallon Fox- Born: 1975- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: First openly trans MMA fighter.  


Gia Gunn- Born: 1990- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Drag performer.  


Rita Hester- Lived: 1963-1998- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Inspiration for the first Transgender Day of Remembrance after her death.   


Rocco Kayiatos- Born: 1979- Pronouns: He/Him- Known for: First openly transgender singer in the hip-hop genre.  


Aidan Key- Born: 1964- Pronouns: He/Him- Known for: K-12 Educator. Author of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves.  


Victoria Kolakowski- Born: 1961- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: First openly transgender individual elected to a judgeship in the United States.  


Justine Lindsay- Born: 1992- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: First openly transgender NFL Cheerleader.  


Dylan Mulvaney- Born: 1996- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Acting, Comedy, TikTok  


Shay Neary- Born: 1988- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: First openly trans plus size model.  


Sylvia Rivera- Lived: 1951-2002- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Trans Rights Activist. Co founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) with Marsha P. Johnson. This organization helped homeless young drag queens, gay youth, and trans women.   


Mj Rodriguez- Born: 1991- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Acting. Blanca is FX’s show Pose.  


Billy Tipton- Lived: 1914-1989- Pronouns: He/Him- Known for: Jazz Musician.  


Laverne Cox- Born: 1972- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Acting & activism.   


Gwendolyn Ann Smith- Born: 1967- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Activist. Founder of Transgender Day of Remembrance.   


Lana Wachowski- Born: 1965- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Co-Director of the Matrix Films.   


Lily Wachowski- Born: 1967- Pronouns: She/Her- Known for: Co-Director of the Matrix Films.    



These are just SOME of the Transgender individuals who have made history. Lets honor them!
